Product: Minimalist oak floating nightstands - custom dimensions and design
Year: 2026
This project brought mybettershelf together with a fellow carpenter in Austria to create bedside units that serve more than simply nightstands: they feature wireless charging and built-in power outlets. Read on to discover what modifications were required to add this extra functionality while preserving the original mybettershelf design.
Ideas and takeaways from Christian’s Shelf Portrait
-
Some projects call for more than custom dimensions. If you have special requirements, do not hesitate to share them with us.
-
Wireless chargers and power outlets can be integrated into our floating furniture. You can complete the final installation yourself, or send us the hardware you would like us to accommodate.
-
Two carpenters are not necessarily competitors - the best results can sometimes come from combining their expertise.

Our customer, Christian Vetö, is a carpenter in Austria (website: https://www.tischler-vetoe.at). While working on a client project, he needed a pair of multifunctional floating nightstands. The classic mybettershelf design suited the project, so he decided to preserve its original look and have us make the units, with several modifications to accommodate third-party components.
We shook hands virtually and agreed that we would produce the nightstands with the necessary modifications, while Christian would add the hardware and carry out the on-site installation himself.
During our search, we came across mybettershelf. Although, as a joinery workshop, we can of course make such furniture ourselves, we were won over by the well-thought-out solution combined with the option for customization. It was precisely the flexibility and the straightforward implementation of our special requests that particularly impressed us.
The project had two main customization requirements:
-
The nightstands needed custom dimensions, making them slightly larger than our standard models.
-
Their construction had to be adapted to accommodate a built-in wireless charger and power outlet.
Customization for the wireless charger
Christian sent us a link to the wireless charger he planned to use, together with its detailed technical specifications. Based on this information, we prepared our production drawings and worked with him to fine-tune the position of each charger.
On one nightstand, the charger was positioned on the left; on the other, it was placed on the right. This creates a symmetrical arrangement once the two units are mounted on either side of the bed.
Installing the wireless charger required us to machine a circular recess measuring 9 cm in diameter and 1.4 cm deep into the underside of the top panel. Our solid wood designs are normally made from 1.4 cm-thick material, which would not have been sufficient for a recess of this depth.
We therefore increased the thickness of the top panel to 1.7 cm. This left a 3 mm layer of wood above the charger - enough to provide the necessary structural stability while still allowing the charging signal to pass through reliably.
We also routed a narrow cable channel from the circular recess to the rear of each nightstand. This keeps the charging cable neatly in place and prevents it from interfering with the drawer.

Customization for the power outlet
The power outlet was designed to be installed at the rear of the drawer, making it accessible whenever the drawer is pulled open.
We agreed to reduce the depth of the drawer, leaving the necessary clearance behind it inside the cabinet. Christian completed the remaining work - including the cutout, wiring, and installation - on site.
He connected the outlet using a coiled cable. This allows the drawer to move freely while the outlet remains connected and keeps the wiring clear of the drawer’s path.
Take a look at the completed project and let the photos speak for themselves. Below, you can also read Christian’s testimonial and recommendation.
We would like to thank him for this exciting project and enjoyable collaboration. We look forward to future projects in which craftspeople can combine their expertise to create something special.
The entire process, from consultation and ordering through to installation, went very smoothly. The bedside tables meet our quality expectations and blend in perfectly with the finished bedroom. We also consider the value for money to be very good, particularly given the scope for customisation.
For us, mybettershelf was the right choice because we found a high-quality, well-thought-out solution that could still be tailored to our specific project. We would therefore recommend mybettershelf at any time.
