When Jody contacted us, she already knew that she prefers floating design, the question was whether she can have a custom size floating nightstand with a floating shelf below, to add extra storage.
Ideas & takeaways from Jody’s shelf portrait:
-
If you need more storage space than just a floating nightstand, adding a shelf below is a great idea.
-
For drywalls, our floating shelf mounting works well if the shelf depth is no larger than 8”. Larger depths require custom solutions that we are happy to discuss.
-
Considering custom size options is a good idea if you need a different size compared to our standard size models - we are happy to take custom orders.

Jody especially liked the idea of a floating nightstand, and with extra shelves she was able to keep the airy, modern look while adding extra storage space on both sides of the bed. She was interested in finding a high quality solid wood piece of furniture but considered many options too expensive. When she realized that we can manufacture her custom requirements at a reasonable price, she chose us - and did not regret.
"Didn't find anything nice for the right price - but mybettershelf is gorgeous: great price and design, great communication and customer service."
The tricky part was the mounting: as in many homes in the United States, most of the walls are drywalls. Drywall is not a problem, but when the furniture has large depth, the mounting requires heavy-duty options. Prior to manufacturing we let Jody know that our brackets offer a stable mounting solution for up to 8” depths on drywalls - however, the floating shelves were almost double, 14” deep.
In such cases we usually recommend heavy-duty alternative mounting kits from Amazon or other sources where it can be easily sourced. With a little research we managed to find a product and were able to manufacture the shelves exactly for those specifications. Jody purchased the recommended brackets and the shelves worked perfectly with them - and to make the mounting even stronger, Jody added further support directly below the shelves. It’s a common way to secure mounting and keep the floating look.
The result is a well-proportioned, symmetrical layout with nightstands and shelves - and a nice view to the Hudson river.
